How to Apply

When you are ready to apply, complete the following steps:

  • Complete the online application
  • Send the following to Rice University at the address below or online, if available:
    • Three (3) personal letters of recommendation — references can submit letters online
    • General GRE scores — use the code 6609 for Rice University (no department code needed)
    • Official transcripts from all universities you have attended
    • TOEFL / IELTS scores (if required)
    • At least 115 on the Duolingo test of English proficiency.
    • The applicant has completed or is expected to complete, a post-secondary degree from an institution in which English is the official language of communication or instruction*.
    • ​​​​For 2024, Rice will not accept the ITP Plus test to evaluate English language proficiency, but scores/interviews are able to be reported to Rice as supplemental material via Vericant.

Transcripts

In general, applicants must have at least a 3.0(B) grade point average in their undergraduate work.

Transcripts should be official and in confidential, signed-across-the-seal envelopes provided to you by the registrar of each institution, undergraduate and graduate, which you have attended. If your school will not provide you directly with an official copy of your transcript, then ask them to send it to the department.

You may also wish to send an unofficial copy, for the application process. Once admitted, the original must be sent.

GRE scores

Some departments at Rice University require scores on the aptitude portion of the GRE (Graduate Record Exam) or the GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Test) as an appropriate advanced test. For 2022 admissions, Rice generally is not requiring the GRE. However, individual degree programs have the option of recommending, strongly recommending, or requiring the general GRE. See more.

TOEFL scores

The English as a Foreign Language test (TOEFL), is required for any student whose native language is not English. Applicants, who already hold a degree from a university where English is the official language, are exempt from providing a TOEFL score. Applicants must score at least 600 on the paper-based TOEFL, at least 250 on the computer-based TOEFL, or at least 90 on the internet-based test. Learn more about the TOEFL.

For students who choose to take the IELTS in lieu of TOEFL, the minimum score is 7.

IELTS scores

Students whose native language is not English may also use the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
IELTS is owned, developed, and delivered through the partnership of the British Council, IDP Education Australia: IELTS Australia, and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations. You can get more information about the IELTS at http://www.ielts.org or send an e-mail to ielts@ieltsintl.org.

  • International applicants who choose to take the IELTS should plan to take the Academic IELTS test or, for 2021, the IELTS Indicator.
  • Scores can be reported directly to Rice using the name "Rice University Graduate Admissions."
  • For students who choose to take the IELTS in lieu of TOEFL, the minimum score is 7.

DUOLINGO scores

The Duolingo English Test is an online English proficiency test that can be taken online, on-demand, in under an hour for only $49. The test is taken via a computer with a camera and includes a proficiency score, video interview, and writing sample which are shared with [institution name] when you send your results. Certified results are available within 48 hours of the test session.

  • Applicants to Rice must earn at least a 115 on the Duolingo English Test.
